Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts.
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie.

"Let me go!" you screamed, struggling to pull your wrist away from his iron grip.

"Can you just stop and listen for once in your life?! Goddammit (f/n)!" he yells in response, tightening his grasp on your thin wrist to the point where you felt like it would snap.

"No! Just let go of me! You're hurting me, Levi!" You half-whimpered in your shout, which only seemed to piss him off even more.

"Well maybe if you stopped struggling and just heard me out, then I wouldn't have to be so fucking harsh!" he spat, yanking you closer to him by your aching wrist, still held tight in his fist.

Your teeth groped at your bottom lip, biting down hard to keep from raising your voice any louder. You knew when you were outdone. But instead of submitting to his request like you always did, your no-longer-sparkling (e/c) orbs narrowed to match his own steely grey ones, dull and cold. It took everything in you to stare him straight in the face, keeping your eyes locked on his, and take a slow breath to calm your raging nerves. This must have caught him off guard because you felt the iron grasp melt away as his hand softened against your bruised skin. With one swift tug of your arm, you opened your mouth to speak.

"I'm leaving you," you stated simply, coldly, and full of resentment. You were tired of his lies that kept you running in circles over and over again. This time you were serious; he wasn't going to sweet talk you out of this decision. As if he could; with the way he's been lately, everything out of his mouth has been daggers plunged deeper into your damaged heart.

"No, you're not."

You were taken aback by his reaction. So calm. So straightforward. He wasn't begging for you to stay or seducing you with tempting words of love and affection that melted your insides. Instead, his eyes glossed over and Levi was gone. The steel shine that you were so used to was now a murky pool of nothingness. The look he gave scared you, to be completely honest. It was a look that you'd never seen before, especially not from your boyfriend of four years.

"Excuse me?" you asked, an eyebrow raised in interest. "How are you going to tell me--"

BAM

No time to process. No time to dodge. In a matter of milliseconds, your back slammed against the hardwood floor of the apartment you both shared. Pain overtook your jaw, a few sore spots on your teeth as well as your cheekbone. Blood seeped from the vacant spot in your mouth where a molar used to fit, but which was now on the floor beside you. Salty tears dripped down your cheek, swollen and reddened, as you looked up to meet the piercing gaze of your attacker.

You wondered how things got this way. How the once so cool and quiet, yet caring Levi Ackerman turned out to be so cruel. You thought back, remembering the days that you first met. His stoic demeanor began to fade away as the two of you spent more time together. Every day after work, he would stop by your place that you occupied at the time. He always claimed it to be "on the way" no matter how many times you pointed out the fact that he lived in the complete opposite side of town. Of course, you didn't mind; it was incredibly sweet of him and it was these small actions that drew you to him.

The months flew by and weeks seemed like days as the two of you began to fall farther in love with each other. He asked you out on a date after about two months since your meeting. Date after date went by, and you finally found the courage to pull him into a kiss, which he gladly obliged to, marking it official that you were a couple. Your first kiss was slow and a bit awkward on your part, but his gentle embrace soothed your nerves. Things only escalated as the months and years passed, the passion shared between you only growing stronger with every day spent together. Simple kisses turning into steamy make-out sessions within a matter of minutes. And on your two year anniversary, he made sweet, fervent love to you, being especially careful not to hurt you in any way. He loved everything about you, and it showed in every swift movement he made on your fragile and exposed body.

However, things started to change around the three year mark for a reason you couldn’t figure out. Sex was rough with more pain than pleasure. Make-outs were sloppy and nothing but lustful. Even simple kisses were distant and almost repetitive. You, of course, had noticed this, but everything in you wanted to hold on to this love that had lasted so long. You confided in your friends, but they all told you the same thing.

“You need to talk to him.”
“He’s taking advantage of you.”
“It’s time for you to grow a pair and dump his ass.”

But it wasn’t that simple. Something about Levi had snapped. You couldn’t pinpoint when or why it happened, but it definitely had. He had always been irritable, but this was a whole new level that was beyond your comprehension.

The taste of iron overflowed in your mouth as your sight fixated on the ebony-haired man in front of you. Silence fell for an eternity as the situation at hand replayed through both of your minds. Finally, your legs shifted beneath you and your hands pushed yourself up from the unforgiving floor. There was no longer a filter that oversaw your intentions before your limbs moved on their own. With no particular aim or direction, your fist hammered against his arm, making him stumble back a bit in shock, not that it had hurt him. Before he could recuperate, another swing was approaching fast, full of all the fury and hate that had built up over the past year and a half. However, there was no crash as expected; instead there was a jolt as your trembling fist came to a sudden stop, caught by Levi’s hand. But there was no way that you would let him stop you. He had hit you first. He had punched you in the face. This was the final straw.

It became an all-out brawl. He no longer cared that you were a woman, much less his girlfriend. Tangled limbs caused you to fall to the floor: scratching, biting, pulling at each other’s hair with no restraint. Bruises accumulated on your skin from his hard beatings; blood was drawn from sharp nails digging into his pale skin. Both of you only could say one thing.

“I hate you.”

Your adrenaline was fading, your breathing picking up as your heart raced. You were barely able to stand, but you managed just long enough to make your way to the door. Levi noticed this and reached for your hand to stop you, but you swiped your hand back, slashing at his face with your nails as hard as you could.

The slam of the door, followed by an angry bang of Levi’s fist against it rang through the almost empty apartment. Levi stood alone, glancing out the window to see you storming down the sidewalk, your figure gradually shrinking as you moved farther and farther away.

Away from him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh my God, (f/n)! What happened to you?” Hanji screeched as she opened the door to see you on the other side, bruised and bleeding. Instantly, the brunette was at your side, practically catching you in her arms as you limped forward, the pain of your injuries finally settling in. You explained the situation as she sat you down, cleaned the blood from your face, and patched your open wounds. Now that you had calmed down, the realization hit you harder than a car crashing into your chest at full speeds.
“It’s over,” you muttered, “It’s all over.”
“I know it hurts sweetie...But you’ll find someone else. I’m glad you stood up for yourself. It was the right thing to do,” your friend smiled, rolling the gauze around your arm.
The feelings you once had for the man never left, and they resurfaced the moment you realized he was gone. Tears stung your eyes and your heart, which had been hanging by a string, finally snapped in two. Conflicted thoughts fought back and forth in your head. Should you go back to him and apologize? Or leave things as they are to heal over time?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After an hour-long soak in the bath, making sure to clean himself of the blood dried from the scratches that stung in the hot water, Levi laid in bed alone. The cold breezes blew through his window, causing a prickling shiver against his skin. A creak of the bed interrupted the silence as he turned onto his side, resting his head on his upper arm, leaving his jet black tresses to hang in front of his emotionless eyes.

“Tch...It’s her own damn fault…” the grey-eyed man mumbled under his breath into the darkness. He tried to tell himself that it didn’t matter, that he didn’t feel anything, that you meant nothing. But the words poisoned his tongue, leaving a tingling burn and rotten aftertaste. He missed you. He missed the feeling of warmth you gave off when you were beside him. The memories of your early years together flooded his brain, clouding his thoughts. Levi sighed and rolled onto his back, trying to find a comfortable position to sleep, but without you in his arms, he felt empty and vulnerable. No light shone through the windowpane, as the new moon provided no ray of hope that you might come back to him.

One sleepless night after another lagged on as Levi trudged through each day, not even bothering to go outside. Somber shadows creeped under his eyes as his skin grew lighter with weariness. Levi only wished he could see you again, so that he may be allowed to apologize. He couldn't function without you beside him and the thought of you being gone forever made him sick to his stomach. The ebony-haired man was beyond sorry for what he did to you and knew that you deserved much better, but he didn't care; he wanted you back more than anything.

A seemingly endless week later, all hope was almost to the point of nonexistence. Levi sat alone on the couch, staring up at the ceiling as the television droned incomprehensibly in the background. A low rapping on the door sounded, making him flinch slightly. A glimmer of eagerness shone in his eyes as he stood and rushed to the door, wishfully expecting to see your beautiful face on the other side. He swung it open in a hurry, but was letdown to see the eccentric Hanji Zoë grinning like an idiot at his threshold.

"Hiya Shorty!" the woman beamed, pushing herself into the irritated man's apartment. "Wow is it a mess in here! You really let the place go to hell, didn't ya? That doesn't sound like the Levi I know."

"What's it to you, Shitty Glasses?!" He retorted, folding his arms across his chest. "What the hell are you even doing here?"

"I came to pick up (f/n)'s things. You two shared a bedroom, right?" she inquired, letting herself into the room without a care in the world. The sound of your name rang in his ears as his heart crumbled. You really had decided to leave him for good, and he wasn't ever going to get the chance to redeem himself. Levi's once broad shoulders drooped while he slumped against the windowsill, looking out to see your (h/c) hair trailing behind you as you left him. The vision was so clear in his mind, and it was something he wanted nothing more than to forget. Your bright and cheerful, (e/c) eyes that lit up with every moment of excitement, your lips that would gently trace against his skin in just the way he liked, your blush, so adorable; he wished something could save him of this remorse that washed over him every day and night. Then something caught his eye, the silhouette of a person, a woman, sitting in the passenger's side of Hanji's car. The image became clearer as he continued to stare. (H/c) hair and (s/c) skin came into sight and Levi's entire demeanor changed.

An obnoxiously loud voice caught him off guard, throwing him out of his thoughts. Hanji was taking a step out the door with a filled duffel bag slung over her right shoulder. "Well I bet that's it, hm? I'll just be taking my leave now."

"Wait," he choked, following the tall woman out, "Let me talk to her!"

"I'm afraid she doesn't want to talk t--"

"Damn it, Hanji, get out of my fucking way!" he barked in response, running past her and to the window where you sat on the other side, trying to hide your face in an attempt to avoid talking. You couldn't help but hear a tapping on the glass, in which you ignored. More tapping. You couldn't break.

"(F/n)! Answer me! Please!" He begged, continuing to tap the glass until you finally caved and rolled down the window.

"What do you wa--"

In one motion, his lips crashed against yours and you could've sworn you felt his hand quivering against your cheek. You pulled away and looked at him in shock. But before you had any chance to say a word, he cut you off yet again.

"Look, (f/n), I know I was a jerk. I know we said things and did things that we didn't mean. And I'm sorry. I am," his steely orbs glistened with passion as he tried everything he could to get you back. Levi knew things wouldn't change overnight. He was fully aware of his anger problems and lack of verbal filter. He knew he'd probably hurt you again if you came back. But that was all he was focused on; if you came back.

"Levi...I just...I don't think things are going to work," you began carefully, trying not to set him off.

"But you're the same as me! Your temper is just as bad, and you're just as blinded to love as I am! Please, we can work through this together. Maybe our relationship isn't as crazy as it seems!" Levi begged, taking your shoulder against his palm. "I don't know how everything is gonna work, but all I know is that I love you. And I can't watch you walk away like this! Come inside and unpack your bag... Please."

You could see that he was serious, but you couldn't help but doubt his words. Still, you loved him. Everything inside you went against your better judgement and wanted to give in to his pleas. You considered this for a few seconds, analyzing the pros and cons of each path. Then the thought reoccurred to you.

He hit you.

Your fingers grazed the spot where he'd injured you. He must have noticed the slight look of fear behind your eyes because he immediately cupped your cheek in his hand. "I'm sorry that I punched you. I promise, the next time I get pissed off, I'll aim my fist at the wall."

"'Next time'?!" you blurted out with almost a scoff in your tone, "There isn't going to be a next time!"

"I promise you, I'm sorry! It won't happen again; just give me another chance. (F/n), I love you. And I can't live without you." His touch was caring and soft, as if he was stroking a flower petal. His eyes were gleaming in the late morning sunlight, as he appeared to be on the brink of tears waiting for your answer.

"I...love you too..." Your eyes watered against your will as tears spilled onto your jeans. "I love you too, Levi. And I want to stay here with you..."

Levi felt as if a hundred-pound burden was lifted from his shoulders and a sigh of relief escaped his lips. You stepped out of the car and into his embrace in which he didn't intend to release any time soon. The shorter man knew his speech hadn't changed anything. He was still the same Levi, irritable and brash, and that wouldn't change. He knew his words were basically meaningless, that he couldn't control his anger, and that he probably wouldn't learn to. But above everything else, he wanted you; he loved you, and he would say anything to keep you by his side.

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts.
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie.
I love the way you lie.
So finally, here's another work! I've been flowing with ideas lately so expect a lot more to come~!

Thank you all for your support!
